I am a few days late of course, but better late than never, right? What an amazing night. However, despite this amazing victory for not only people of the US, but specifically a group of people who have long been oppressed in our country, another group that continues to be discriminated against to this very day were faced with a huge set-back. And if you so blindly think that racism is dead and gone from the US, then you need to crawl out from under the rock you've been living under and just take a look at some of the following Facebook statuses I saw after Obama was declared the winner:
'ANTICHRIST'
'TERRORIST'
'God help our country...'
and then there were the message board posts saying he would not last long. Sound like a threat, much? DISGUSTING.
Despite this great achievement, I am deeply saddened by the fact that though one civil rights issue is on its way to possibly being resolve, another group working for recognition in our nation were denied a simple right afforded to all straight Americans. I am absolutely disgusted by California, Arizona, Florida, and Arkansas. The first three states passed propositions that allow bans on gay marriage, while Arkansas passed a proposition that bans gay couples from adopting. You know, because those gays will turn all the kids in foster care waiting for homes gay if we give them the chance. Never mind that there are hundreds of thousands of children who need loving homes that so many couples are willing to provide, gay or straight. Clearly, only straight people are good parents. Straight people never abuse children, never cheat the system out of money, and only straight people are fit to be parents. Those darn gays, just unfit all around.
Yeah. Right.
I guess I kind of expected the gay marriage bans to pass in Arizona and Florida, as much as it pains me to say that. But California? Really? It is so depressing and deeply disturbing that in 2008, people would believe it is still okay to treat a significant portion of our population as second class citizens. Do not give me bullshit about religion and how gays cannot marry because God condemns homosexuality. Your argument is complete garbage and not remotely relevant, because atheists get married all the time, and they do not subscribe to this Christian mythology that so many right-wing conservatives use as justification for denying citizens the basic rights and protection afforded to our straight citizens. It is appalling and so fucking infuriating that people feel so threatened that they would ban something that DOESN'T EVEN EFFECT THEM!
A few days ago my Facebook status said something to the effect of wondering if someone could explain to me how two dudes getting hitched made a hetero marriage any less valid. You know what I got? A bunch of bullshit about why homosexuality was wrong. Not one single solitary way that it affected this guy's marriage, but just why it was wrong. You know what I say to that? Fuck you. Seriously. You don't like gay marriage? Then DON'T GET ONE. It did not affect this guy in any way if two dudes or two chicks wanted to get married, but yet it was wrong. I even asked him again how it specifically affected him but he quit responding because he was pouting when I referred to his argument as this 'Christian mythology'. Boo-fucking-hoo. I know just as many gay people who are religious and practice their faith, as those I know who do not. I know just as many atheists who are married, and did it have one fucking thing to do with church? NO. Because marriage does not have to have religion involved. And I am so sick and tired of this bullshit and people trying to dictate how others can live their lives. People do not ask to be gay, but that is how they are made, and it is absolutely disgusting that because of something they can not control, they are treated as though they are not full citizens of our country. You know, the place that is the 'home of the free'.
